When lonely artist Siôn Ruston retreats to the seaside village of Rosewick Bay, Yorkshire, to recover from a suicide attempt, he doesn’t expect to encounter any ghosts, let alone the one who appears in his bedroom every morning at dawn. He also doesn’t expect to meet his ghost’s gorgeous, flirty descendant working at the local museum… and the village pub, and as a lifeboat volunteer. But Mattie’s great-great-grandfather isn’t the only specter in Rosewick Bay, and as Siôn and Mattie investigate an ill-fated love affair from a bygone era, they begin a romance of their own, one that will hopefully escape the tragedy Mattie’s ancestor suffered.
But the ghosts aren’t the only ones with secrets, and the things Siôn and Mattie are keeping from each other threaten to tear them apart. And all the while, the dead are biding their time, because the curse of Rosewick Bay has never been broken. If the ghosts are seen on the streets, local tradition foretells a man will drown before the summer’s end.

I really loved this. It is one of my favorite romance reads in recent memory. The characters, Sion and Mattie, are engaging and interesting, but also have depth. Sion is recuperating after a suicide attempt, and the story is told from his POV. His internal dialog about his struggles with suicide are some of the best I've read.
There is a lot happening in this book. Sion is trying to rebuild himself after a failed attempt to end his life. He rents a holiday home where he meets Mattie. They also find some ghosts who do not mean them well.
Many romance books really don't have much insight or real emotional reflection on the process of falling in love. This book is an exception- the author really lets you into Sion's head as he battles himself over the idea of falling for Mattie. The reader can really see Mattie through Sion's eyes and understand why he is falling for him.
The ghost story was somewhat reminiscent of one of my favorite het romance authors, Susanna Kearsly. She writes time slip romances, and while this isn't exactly a time slip romance it had some similar features as the reader is taken back and forth between a past romance and a present romance, and eventually the time periods intersect in a climactic scene.
While this isn't a period romance, the past plays a major part in the plot, and the location is also a key player.
I do have a couple quibbles. One, the author should watch out for odd similes. Two, she should really try to reduce the use of cliches in sex scenes. She avoids them so well in the romance and its do refreshing, it's kind of a bummer to read sex scenes that include the same old phrases. Third, I thought the end was a little less compelling than it could have been. It turned a bit more action movie and less period thriller.
But the overall experience was definitely a good one.

Spindrift edition by Amy Rae Durreson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A good old fashioned ghost story, it will give you goosebumps and have you turning lights on and jumping under the covers! I loved Mattie and Sion, the love story as engaging as the ghost story was tragic. Highly recommended
A spooky, tragic ghost story. A sweet love story. And a thrilling, nail-biting ending. It has everything. I loved this book from beginning to end.
This book starts dark and dreary. It quickly moves and introduces the next character Mattie who brings light with him and shines it on Sion. The story is all told from Sion's point of view and as the romance between Mattie and Sion grows so does the haunting by the ghost. The story has a decent level of heat explores difficult issues and still resolves issues in a satisfying manner.
Every Durreson book I read convinces me history is magical---yet still tangible and deeply relevant to our own narratives. Spindrift in particular has a gorgeous ghost story, possibly my favorite ever, and a very fair portrayal of an artist. (As an oil painter, I can't attest to any of the watercolor techniques but the line about quality of light is spot-on and made me swoon.)
Sion and Mattie are an adorable couple! Especially Mattie. Such a cutie.
Extra credit for excellent, nuanced female side characters. Highly recommended for lovers of chilling atmospheric romances with hints of mystery and academia. Read this if you have a Whyborne & Griffin hangover.
This one needs a sixth star poetry in the form of a novel. It is that beautifully written. Our protagonist is so broken, and you know just enough to really feel for him.
And then he meets Matty, the ray of sunshine.
Who looks just like the ghost.
That tension shifts and fades and gets sharp, but never leaves, and as more is learned, it becomes unnerving and even scary. I don't typically like ghost stories. But this one is exceptional.
This is the first book by Durreson that wobbled for me. I just couldn't connect with Mattie. His character just wouldn't solidify for me. Until the ghost story really kicked in, I was starting to think about returning this one. But the ghost story is incredibly intriguing and I became quickly invested in it. By then, Mattie started to work better for me.
Loved the created setting, the amalgamated history, and all the things that make me adore Durreson's work. A very gripping tale and I was very happy for Siön's happily ever after.
This is a totally engrossing summer read. Ghost story, romance, with some danger/mystery/suspense. I loved it!
Siôn is recuperating for the summer, renting a seaside cottage in Yorkshire, and roaming about painting and taking photos. Then he sees a ghost, more of the residual kind, who moves through his bedroom and seems to return every morning to do the same thing. Despite being somewhat fragile, mentally, Siôn manages to cope. He discovers that the ghost closely resembles Mattie, the guy living in the downstairs portion of the cottage.
Gradually, the village legends of ghosts and drownings and the exploits of the lifeboat crews (which Mattie is a part of) are revealed as Siôn and Mattie's relationship grows. Mattie, seemingly open and care-free, has issues of his own. Healing needs to happen and trust gained, along with the unraveling of the mystery of the ghosts, if the tragedies of the past are not to reoccur.
Both characters are appealing, but very human. The ghosts and mystery thread winds through the romance and adds suspense to their already dramatic pasts, with the summer, seaside setting helping to keep things from getting too sad and dark. It was a great mix, making for a very enjoyable and memorable read.
